IVL a partner in EU project on environmental impact of innovations

IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute is one of seven major partners from European universities and research institutes taking part in a new, three-year EU research project to evaluate the environmental impact of innovations.

“At present, we can measure the environmental impact of an individual innovation fairly accurately. However, we do not have sufficient knowledge to provide a coherent picture of the impact of all European innovations," explains Tomas Rydberg, project manager at IVL.

IVL will lead the sub-project entitled Macro-environmental impacts: indicators and data. Initially, this will involve mapping the reporting process from individual innovation to national authority, as well as at EU level.

“The project is highly valuable since it will ultimately provide a model or a methodology for measuring the environmental impact of innovations. In the longer term, this will also help to ensure that the innovations are moving in an environmentally favourable direction. In time, this knowledge will influence the EU´s innovation policy," adds Tomas Rydberg.

Funded by the EU, the EmInInn (Environmental Macro Indicators of Innovation) project has a budget of just over €3 million.
