How do innovations become sustainable?

Together with other partners in the EU's SPIN project, IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute is studying how to integrate sustainability issues in the innovation process.

Sweden enjoys a high ranking among innovative countries in the EU and the world at large. However, not all innovations are sustainable. Not only are environmental and sustainability innovations necessary to progress towards sustainable development — all innovations in the various areas must also be more sustainable.

For this reason, IVL is developing a summary of existing methods for helping small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with their innovation and product development processes. The purpose of the study is to identify functioning methods while also identifying areas in which further development is needed.

The work is being carried out partly as a graduate thesis at Linköping University and partly within the EU´s SPIN (Sustainable Production through innovation in SMEs) project involving partners in the Baltic region.
